Eastern Times, New Delhi : On February 13, Professor G.N. Saibaba, who has been in jail since 2017, tested positive for Covid-19 in the prison. After that his body diagnosis showed some symptoms of the said virus. It is important to note that G.N. Saibaba has been among the political prisoners who have been locked up by the state for standing against injustice. Alleging that he had “Maoist” links, the government has kept him in the Nagpur central prison since 2017.
His incarceration is one of the shameful instances that remain a blot on our country’s democratic setup, NCHRO said in a statement.
GN Saibaba, who is 70 percent handicapped and diabetic, has been kept in an “anda” cell, which makes his moving around nearly impossible and precarious as he is already handicapped. Now that he has tested positive for coronavirus, the jail superintendent has said that he will be treated in the same jail.
The National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations finds this a testament to the undemocratic character of the government. Not only GN Saibaba poses no threat to anyone, making his incarceration undemocratic and nonsensical, but he has also been continuously denied basic human dignity. NCHRO demand the immediate release of Professor GN Saibaba.
Statement said, the fact that he has tested positive for coronavirus tells us that the conditions in the prison are as bad as we had expected them to be.
GN Saibaba has been in a vulnerable condition for a long time, and should be released immediately on humanitarian grounds and provided the best medical treatment outside the prison. We condemn the attitude of the government denying basic human rights and dignity to Prof.
GN Saibaba, and reiterate our demand to release him immediately and facilitate medical treatment to him at the earliest.
