Miscreants set 6 buses on fire in Dhaka, none reportedly hurt

Eastern Times, Special Correspondent, Dhaka, 12 November: Some unidentified miscreants have set six buses on fire at different spots in the capital on Thursday afternoon amid the by-polls to the Dhaka-18 constituency.

However, none was reportedly injured in the arson incidents.

Police suspected that it could be an attempt to foil the by-election.

According to Fire Service, six buses caught fire at Shahbagh, Kataban, Motijheel, secretariat intersection adjacent to the Press Club, in front of the Awami League’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue and Khilgaon. All the incidents took place between 1:30pm to 2:30pm.

Talking to Our Correspondent, Fire Service Headquarters’ duty Officer Rasel Ahmed said, “The fire on the buses in front of the Awami League party office and in Shahbag has been completely doused.”

“Attempts are underway to bring the overall situation under control,” he said, adding that they are working to ascertain the cause and casualties of these incidents.

Meanwhile, Walid Hossain, deputy commissioner to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (media wing), said, “Arson in buses in the city may be an attempt to foil the Dhaka-18 by-polls.”

“We will shortly brief the media in this regard,” he added.
