Eastern Times, Kolkata: Taking to the streets on Tuesday Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee started her four kilometer long march from the lodge junction in Bolpur in Santiniketan which ended at the Jambuni junction.
Significantly, both the sides of the road was decorated with cutouts of Rabindranath Tagore, Mamata Banerjee and Anubrat Mandal. Pictures of Banerjee and Anubrat Mandal were bigger than that of Tagore. At the end of the procession, Mamata again laid a wreath at the statue of the poet. Mamata Banerjee and MP Shatabdi Roy were in front of the road show. Behind them were Baul artists, kirtaniyas and drummers.
The heat of politics is increasing as the assembly elections are approaching. The people from the background of the cultural world of Bolpur were more in numbers than the grassroot activists and supporters of TMC in today’s procession. It is to be noted that Amit Shah, who had lunch at the house of one of a Baul artists, was also part of the procession.
The Trinamool that day claimed that two lakh people had joined Mamata Banerjee’s procession. While some preferred walking, there were many others who stood on both sides of the road. To handle the crowd, they were eventually tied to ropes on both sides of the street. However, BJP leader Anupam Hazra alleged that the Trinamool has brought people from outside the district with threats and joined the march.
At the end of the road show, Mamata gave a speech at Jambuni saying, “Rabindranath-Amartya Sen have been attacked for some time. There is no need to show the dream of a new golden Bengal. Rabindranath is the creator of golden Bengal. Hateful politics is being imported to Visva-Bharati”.
Mamata further claimed that the food of the five-star hotel is being run as the food of the indigenous people. Whereas, the Baul artist from Bolpur himself joined the CM’s procession.
Mamata in her speech appealed the masses to send the BJP away by not voting. “You can buy few MLAs with money, but TMC cannot be bought. I have only one family, a family of people, and no one else. If you see an outsider in the village, report it to the police. Cut off the voice and blow up the opposition”.
