Journalists across Bangladesh demand Rozina’s release

Eastern Times Correspondent, Dhaka, 19 may: The journalist community in Bangladesh on Wednesday continued protest at the arrest of Prothom Alo senior reporter Rozina Islam and demanded her release.

In Dhaka, a human chain of journalists in front of the National Press Club demanded immediate release of Rozina Islam.

The senior journalist was handed over to Shahbagh police station after she had been confined for around five hours at the health secretary’s office in the Secretariat on Monday.

Bangladesh Secretariat Reporter’s Forum, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Bangladesh Photo Journalists Association and Rangpur Division Journalist Association participated in the human chain.

Rozina was kept confined at the health ministry for more than five hours on Monday before being handed over to police.

Later, she was shown arrested in the case on charges of spiriting away “important” documents.

Investigative journalist Rozina, known for dozens of ground-breaking reports in her career, was charged with breaching the Official Secrets Act 1923.

Rozina Islam is known for her strong reportage of official corruption. She has recently made several investigative reports revealing corruptions in the health sector.
