Eastern Times, New Delhi: All of a sudden, tussle has come up regarding Majerhat bridge in Kolkata between Mamata Banerjee government and Eastern Railway.
CM Mamata Banerjee claimed on Thursday that the bridge could not be opened till now due to the reasons of railway which could have been opened nine months back, but this claim was vehemently rejected by the Eastern Railway.
The railway has claimed that all work of Majerhat bridge is lying stalled due to some nominal permissions or approval of the state government.
Making this claim of the Eastern Railway as its weapon, the saffron camp has come to the forefront.
Taratala assumed the look of a warfield centering around the protest of BJP for their demand for opening the bridge on Thursday.
Road block protest rally scuffle with the police retaliated by lathi-charge. Quite a few BJP workers, supporters including women were injured and more than 40 BJP supporters were arrested. Taratala area remained shut for quite a long time on Thursday afternoon.
Thereafter, the CM claimed that due to the dillydally of the centre, time is being taken for reconstruction and opening of the bridge.
She further lashed out against the centre saying that the railways did not give approval for continuous nine months and this resulted in delay in completion of the bridge.
Led by minister Partha Chatterjee, TMC took out a rally protesting against the BJP activities.
Amit Malviya of the BJP said that Eastern Railway has vehemently discarded the pretext of CM. Other than civil work, Mamata government has not been able to give mandatory safety certificate regarding bridge construction till date. This seems to be unnecessary delay towards opening of the bridge before the election.
The public is facing immense inconvenience.
The bridge broke down on September 4, 2018. The Eastern Railway has dismissed the claim of the CM. It was posted on twitter that the work of the bridge could not progress as permission from state government could not be obtained.
