‘I got numerous phone calls invitation from Assam after the song became viral’

Eastern Times  Correspondent, Dhaka: Famous Bangladeshi actor Masum Aziz has recently become viral on social media by singing a song of legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika. The reason for being viral is that he sang the song almost like Bhupen’s melodious voice. After hearing the song, many have called Masum Aziz as the living Bhupen Hazarika.

Recently, the famous actor gave an exclusive interview to Eastern Chronicle and told in this regard that, “After listening to this song, many Assamese people called me from different parts of Assam and invited me.

They told that Bhupen Hazarika was no more; we would will feel his melodious voice alive after listening to his songs in your voice.

“Not only from Assam, but also from West Bengal and different parts of our Bangladesh, many people are calling me,” he said. They say, I have sung like Bhupen Hazarika. I’m glad to hear that. I am inspired to sing more of Bhupen Hazarika’s songs.”

“I sang this song a long time ago,” he said about the viral song. I sang it live on Bangladesh Television. Then I sang three songs. I sang these three songs of my life. All are Bhupen Hazarika’s songs. There was a live show on the day Bhupen Da died. I recently uploaded this song to my channel. Then it has gone viral. “

“I grew up in a musical family environment,” said the famous Bangladeshi actor. When I was in university, I became an actor by giving background musical voice to dramas. My voice got damaged while working on stage in Dhaka. There was an auditorium in Dhaka. The sound system there was very bad. We had to shout so that the audience could listen. I would shout to get reached my voice to the audience in the back. As a result, my glands became hard. I lost the melody of my voice. Before that I used to sing melodies. I used to sing classical music. That thing was ruined while doing drama. Even then the keen on song remain in me. I have been keeping on singing in chorus in the play. ”

Regarding singing songs of Bhupen Hazarika, Masum Aziz said, “I became a fan of Bhupen Da when I first listened to his song in his voice. I used to sing his songs in my house. When I was rehearsing a play at Dhaka University’s TSC and singing Bhupen Hazarika’s songs, many would say did Bhupen Hazarika come to Dhaka? Many used to say that I sing Bhupen Hazarika’s songs well. I also used to sing Bhupen Hazarika’s songs in many programs at Dhaka University. ”

“The biggest event or revolution in my life is the meeting with Bhupen Hazarika,” he said. We went to Calcutta to work on a film. Bhupen Hazarika did the background of that film. Bangladesh Tea Board was the owner of the film. The film was directed by Mamunur Rashid. I was his assistant. The script of the film was earlier sent to Bhupen Hazarika.

We met at his home on Golf Club Street in Kolkata. At that time Mamun Bhai (Brother) said to Bhupenda- Dada, Masum sings your song very well.

Then Bhupen Da called his assistant Kalpana [Kalpana Lajmi] and asked her to bring the harmonium. I started singing. First I sang ‘People for People’. Bhupen Da was very impressed. Later, he told Lajmi to bring the tape recorder. Then he recorded whole of my song. All of which were Bhupen Hazarika’s songs. After the song, Bhupendra called his arranger Alok Nath and said, “take Masum’s phone number, I would need him. After that, I did not have any contact with Bhupen da.

Since then my love for him has been growing up. I love him more than his songs what I sing in my voice. “

Regarding the song that has gone viral recently, Masum said, “I would sing Bhupen Hazarika’s song in the media, a recorded song would come out – I never dreamed of that. But the day Bhupen Da died, I got a call from Bangladesh Television, they were waiting for me. They would hold a program in memory of Hazarika. Leaving the busyness and fatigue of the whole day beyond, I went to the event and sang the first Bhupen Da’s recorded song live on that day – ‘People for People’. It was the first song to be aired on television. Then it became fixed.

I have always been called whenever there is an event in his memory. I go and sing because I love Bhupen. That’s how I sang a total of three songs. One of the songs has gone viral on social media recently. Then I have sung Bhupen Da’s another song ‘Behula Bangla’ recently. When I uploaded this song on my own youtube channel, people in Bangladesh have come to know that I sing Bhupen Da’s songs. But this song has somehow reached Assam.

Then the song has gone viral. Many people from Assam have called me, sending me invitations. They are saying, ‘We want to see you; we want to hear Bhupen Hazarika’s song in your voice.’ They are saying, Bhupen Hazarika is gone, but you are, we will find Bhupen Hazarika alive in your voice. ”

Asked if he would sing more after being viral, Masum Aziz said, “I have a dream, I will sing many more songs of Bhupen Hazarika. But now I am old, I can’t even if I want to. Another thing is that I am an actor; I can’t practice the song well. A song maybe sung well. But there is no guarantee that other songs will be good later.

Nevertheless many are encouraging to sing, my wife also says do more Bhupen Hazarika songs. My son is also telling me to sing more. I will sing more of Bhupen Hazarika’s songs. ”
