Bangladesh to help Maldives combat climate changes: Hasina

Eastern Times  Correspondent, Dhaka, 10 February : Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has assured the visiting Foreign Minister of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid of extending Bangladesh’s all-out support to his country in the fight climate changes.

She made the pledge during a courtesy call by Abdulla Shahid at her official residence Gananbhaban in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“As the Chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, Sheikh Hasina assured that Bangladesh would extend the highest possible support to the Maldives in facing the adverse impacts of the climate changes,” said prime minister’s Assistant Press Secretary MM Emrul Kayas.

The premier said Bangladesh had designed and is now implementing its own “mitigation” and “adaptation” plans to combat the adverse impacts of climate change.

The Maldivian foreign minister said his country will regularize a good number of undocumented Bangladeshis living in the Maldives following due procedures, before adding that Bangladeshis staying in the Maldives will get free vaccination against Covid-19.

Noting that Bangladesh sheltered over one million Rohingya people, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said necessary activities are continuing to relocate a significant number of the Myanmar refugees to Bhashanchar.

Highlighting her government’s development activities, she said not a single person will remain landless and homeless in Bangladesh.

The premier also expressed her satisfaction on the Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed on Tuesday between Bangladesh and the Maldives.

The first MoU is on the placement of human resources between the two countries to provide a solid framework for the recruitment of human resources from Bangladesh.

The second one is focused on the cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute of the Maldives and the Foreign Service Academy of Bangladesh over the training development of Foreign Service officers of the two countries.

Lauding the prime minister’s leadership for tremendous development and successes in different sectors, Abdulla Shahid dubbed her as an important leader not only in Bangladesh or South Asia but in the entire world.

The visiting foreign minister said the President of the Maldives thanked the Prime Minister for inviting him to attend the celebration function of the Independence Day of Bangladesh in the Mujib Borsha.

Commenting on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he said the architect of an Bangladesh was a great leader not only for his country but also for the whole world.

The Maldivian minister also expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for extending medical assistants to the Maldives in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.
